California law bans same sex marriages, but this was overturned by the CA Supreme Court. There is a pending amendment to the state's constitution up for vote in November that may invalidate the court's ruling. As of right now, same sex marriages are legal.
California also has a "civil partnership" law that allows partners to register with the state and have many of the same benefits as those in a marriage.
