Sexual Orientation
|
While it is more common today to encounter someone who is openly gay,
many young teens (as well as older people) still find themselves forced
to hide the fact that they are gay or may be questioning their sexual
orientation. The fact of the matter is that a great many
adolescents go through periods where they are not sure about their
sexual orientation, and that is perfectly normal. Sadly, you won't
hear that from most sex education courses taught in the schools these
days. As a result, many of you will have to deal with these issues
on your own. We've created a section specifically dealing with the
kinds of issues and concerns that you are facing or will face as you
confront your questions about your sexuality and what it means for you,
your family, and future partners. It is important for you to know that you are most definitely not alone when it comes to what you're going through. Fortunately, as time progresses, the more intelligent people in our world recognize that sexual orientation is just one facet of who you are and not *the* defining one. There is no "normal" when it comes to sexuality, only stereotypes and social constructs that are gradually being eroded and replaced with acceptance and tolerance. Use the information here to help you come to terms with your sexuality. You may discover that you're gay after all, or you may figure out that you're straight. Either way, you're perfectly "normal." |
