New Article: Female Sexual Desire
A significant number of the critics of today's sex education curricula state that one of the greatest shortcomings of all of the current sex education materials is the complete lack of attention to the concept of sexual desire in girls. And, when it is addressed, it is almost always done in negative terms. Those of us who study these sorts of things believe that this is because it might be seen as "encouraging" sexual expression in young women. In today's repressed "culture war" mentality, of coruse, this would be tantatmount to professional suicide if a sex educator actually explained that sexual desire in young women was "normal." I intend to do what I can to make sure that it is not ignored, however. :)
With that in mind, I've written an article for the CC web site that explains that sexual desire in young women is perfectly normal and healthy. It is a long read, but the concept itself has been so completely ignored that it needs to be addressed in depth.
As always, comments or suggestions about the article are welcome - anything I can do to make it more readable and understandable, etc.
Female Sexual Desire
Desire: To wish or long for; crave; want.
Desire is a powerful human emotion – one that is experienced from the very beginning of life. Even as an infant, you desire food, comfort, and affection. Desire takes a more prominent role as you move through puberty, though. As your body begins to realize that it is capable of reproducing and the hormones start to flow, you begin to sense attractions to other people. As these attractions grow and you become closer to a particular person, you might develop a desire to become intimate with him/her. At some point in your life you're liable to act on that desire and give in to the longing for a sexual interaction with another person. Under the right set of circumstances, this can create an incredible bond between two people and can be very powerful and life-affirming. If done under the wrong circumstances, however, it can damage your self-esteem and your ability to form those special kinds of attachments necessary for relationships to progress normally in the future.
